TPS61093: Current rating

I am looking for a DC\DC regulator with following requirements :-

Vout = +12V, Vin = +5V Iout = 0.5A aprox.

I am looking for the smallest PCB area !

One of the TI Employees suggested the TPS61093 ! However when looked at the data sheet at it stated that :-


"When the output current exceeds the overload limit, the isolation switch of the IC opens up to disconnect the output from the input" where the overload limit (IOL) = 300 mA TYP ? I require a min current of 500mA ? 

If the TPS61093 will not meet this min requirement - can you suggest a different part ?

    Hi Shmuel,
    The TPS61093 can't support 0.5A output current. I would suggest TPS61089 which is fully integrated device. so the solution size can be reduce.

    Do you have any other solution with a smaller PCB real estate - I don't need the IOUT = 2 A, our requirements are Iout ≥ 0.5A !

    Hi Shmuel,
    the TPS61372 is smaller if the BGA is acceptable. other solutions need an external diode which will increase the solution size.

    Dear Jasper Li,

    Both of these chips their pitch is a little too small for us. We had a recent design with an IC with a pitch of 0.4mm and we had a lot of trouble with the PCB fabrication and solder mask ! I was hoping for a solution with possibly fewer external components what do you suggest ? I don't think we can go below a pitch of 0.5mm ! Also is there no such thing available with the inductor integrated into the IC - it is usually the inductor that takes up all the room ?

    I am replying since Jasper is out. I found one device(TPS81256) which integrated inductors in MicroSiP package, but it seems it doesn't support 10Vout.

    Hi Shmuel:
    1. With inductance integrated: I'm sorry that the module with inductance integrated is not suit for 12V/500mA output as Eric mentioned.
    2. With diode integrated: TPS61372 (with BGA package); TPS61089, small size solution.
    3. Diode outside: TPS61085(with VSSOP package, easy for solder mask). And others...
    I thought TPS61089 is suit for your small size needs if you could accept VQFN package.
