TPS51206: S3 to be Open

Part Number: TPS51206

Hi,

We got a question from the customer about TPS51206.
Could you help us?

[Question]
- What is going to happen if S3 pin is to be open under the IC is operating? Is there concern to damage to the IC?
- Are there pull-down or pull-up resistor on S3 pin?

Best Regards,
tateo

  • Hi Tateo,

If S3 pin is open, the noise could be coupled to the pin and pull S3 pin high or low.
S3 pin should be controlled by external voltage.

    Thanks

  • Hi, Thank you for your reply. We understand the S3 should be controlled by external voltage. But they need consider with the abnormal situation which S3 is open. So could you please confirm about below qestion?

    - When external voltage(including the noise) doesn't supply to S3, what is the behavior of the IC? Is there concern to damage to the IC?

    Best Regards,
    tateo

  • Hi Tateo,

There is no internal pull-up or pull-down resistor on S3 pin.
If S3 is totally open, the S3 pin voltage could be any voltage due to noise coupling.
If the voltage is above ABS spec, pin damage may happen.

If S3 is connected to external voltage and external voltage may be open in abnormal situation, I would suggest to add a resistor like 10k between
S3 and ground. In that case, even external voltage is open, S3 pin voltage will be zero.

    Thanks
