TPS61170: using to drive a string of white LEDs

Part Number: TPS61170
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61165

Team,

Would TPS61170 be suitable to drive a string of white LEDs at a constant current with dimming?

The datasheet shows mostly constant voltage topologies.

Thanks

Viktorija

  • HI Viktorija,

What is your LED spec? Theoretically it can. You can put the LED string in series with a resistor connecting to the GND, and use the resistor voltage as the FB signal. The circuit will regulate the voltage across the resistor, resulting in a constant dc current through the LED string. However, this is not efficient because of the 1.22V FB ref voltage, unless you use the PWM to reduce program the FB ref voltage to a lower level.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Viktorija,
the TPS61170 is mainly used in voltage regulator. I would suggest a LED driver IC such as TPS61165
