LP8863-Q1: RGB driver or general purpose ?

Part Number: LP8863-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC59108

Hello all!

Thanks for watching!

For my project a LED PWM driver is probably the best option and my question is regarding which one to choose.

Chosen are 4 CREE RGB SMD Led's to be driven independently. The current per channel should be 150 to 200mA per channel.

This narrows down the options I know.

Q1 is it necessary for the driver to be a RGB version (subfamily) or any other with PWM will do ? (the LP8863 for instance)

Q2 would you choose a model with internal or external FET's ?

Q3 one driver (3-ch.) per LED or a 12 to 24 channel model ?

Q4 PWM or constant current?

Q5 for a better (what is better) quality of dimming a minimum of 12 bit should be maintained, do you agree ?

Q6 I am really searching for a guide to help me design the above, could you point me one ?

Hope this gives some idea of what the project is all about and if you have the time a reply please do!

Even more, when you do live in Holland and have the knowledge about all of the above maybe we can get together?

Thanks in advance!

Henk

  • Hi, Henk,

Proper engineer has been assigned to take a look at this and will reply you soon.

Due to Chinese new year holidays, response maybe delayed.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Regards,
    Kenneth
  • Hi Henk,

Firstly, would you mind introducing what is the end equipment of your application? What is the forward voltage drop of each LED (red/green/blue)? What is the input voltage range? Then we can help to recommend the most suitable device for your application.

  • Hello Shirley,

Hereby some additional information regarding my project:

The application is to be used indoors as effect lightning againts the wall.

Preferred supply voltage is 5VDC. But this can change if necessary for the right chip!

The forward voltage for the led is for RED 2.1V, GREEN 3.0V and BLUE 3.1V

Four RGB LED's, one LED per output results in 12 channels total.  Driven by 1 chip or 2 or 4, whatever is the best option.

    Thankyou,

    Henk

  • Hi Henk,

Thanks for the information. Can you please check if TLC59108 can meet your requirement? You can connect two channels together for one LED.
