TPS62173: LiPo Batteries Consistently Burning Hole Above Vin Pin

We are using the provided layout in the datasheet, and have verified all of our boards from a benchtop power supply up to 20V input. However, when powering off off 3S (12V) LiPo batteries we are consistently burning holes in the regulator right above the Vin pin. The only load is an LED drawing 5mA. What makes the LiPo input different than the power supply? Is there additional buffering/protection we should add? The datasheet indicates that these regulators are designed for use with LiPo batteries, but that does not seem to be the case. Thanks!

Hi Matt,

Does it mean you can observe a burning hole on the GND layer? I am not quite sure to understand, did you measure your Lipo input voltage when connected and it was lower than 12V?

To help you better, I would need a bit more information on the issue you faced. Did you observe a current inrush when powering off? Are all the LEDs still up and running?
