WEBENCH® Tools/LM5176-Q1: Output capacitor selection and webench design verification

Part Number: LM5176-Q1

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hi, I am integrating the LM5176-Q1 to power a 24V/1.5A load from a 28V nominal DC rail that can drop to 22-25V (6S LIPO). I am curious about the validity of the webench design and would like a confirmation, as it is very different than the numbers I got from interpreting the datasheet. Also I am curious about the qty of the output capacitors and would like to hear an explanation.

Thanks in advance,

  • Hi Justin,

Thank you for your interests. Note that an optimal design is always the result of the process of iterations. The Webench model is based on our EVM design, and it may have limitations not best suitable for your particular applications. However, the webench is a very good start point and you can always fine tune the circuit by cross checking against the design tool at the following link, and also by experiment.

Regarding the output capacitor, the datasheet as well as the design tool discusses the total capacitance, and you can make up with a few smaller capacitors. We would like to recommend to use the combination of ceramic and electrolytic, with the former coping with the output ripples and the latter provide storage and damping factor.

    Thanks,
