TPS63030: recharge battery with TPS63030 connected

Part Number: TPS63030

Dear,

I'm designing an equipment with Li-ion rechargeable battery that is connected in input to a TPS63030 to regulate voltage. The battery is soldered on two pads (one is ground and the other is the Vin, pin 5, of TPS63030).

The regulated 3.3V output of TPS63030 is used to supply microcontroller and other electronic components.

We need to periodically recharge the battery with external (the battery charger board is externally to board in which are mounted battery, TPS63030 and other electronic components) battery charger for Li-ion chemistry.

When we recharge the battery the board with microcontroller and other electronic components will be power off (in the charge battery phase we only need to recharge battery, all other electronic parts will be not work).

I would like to know if we can directly connect the output of external battery charger to a two pads of the battery (ground and Vin pin of TPS63030) without problem. Will the battery recharge correctly also with TPS63030 connected (pin Vin of TPS63030 is connected directly to battery positive terminal with track on our board) or is it better to put TPS63030 in shutdown mode with Enable pin ties to ground ?

Many thanks

Francesco

  • Hi Francesco,

I do not see problems having the TPS63030 connected in parallel to a Li-ion battery while it is being charged. If no electronics operate during the battery charging, than you can expect the no-load input current on the Vin pin of the TPS63030 to be less than 50 µA. If you put it in shutdown than it is below 1 µA. Normally, in both cases, this is too low to interfere with the charging process.

What is the charging current of the battery?

    Best regards,
    Milos

  • Hi Milos,
    many thanks for your reply!
We do not still select rechargeable battery but probably will be in the range of (500-800)mAh, therefore it depend on which rate we charge (between 0.5C to 1C) but I presume that charge current will be between (300-500)mA range.

    Best Regards
    Francesco
  • Hi Francesco,

During the last part of the Li-ion charging (the constant voltage part) the charging is usually stopped once the battery current drops down to few percent of the initial charge current. 50 µA is much lower than this, so leaving the TPS63030 turned on should not interfere with the charging, assuming that everything behind the TPS63030 is shut down.

    Best regards,
    Milos
