BQ76940: Capacitors between VC15x, VC10x, VC5x, Gnd

Part Number: BQ76940

Hi,

I want to know the use of 10uF, 50V ceramic capacitors used between VC15x-VC10x, VC10x-VC5x and VC5x-Gnd.

1. What if I don't use these capacitors?

2. Can I replace the 10uF, 50V capacitor with 0.1uF, 50V cap? I currently don't have 10uF value available with me.

What other alternative will you suggest, expert?

  • Hi Pranit,

Due to loading, an update will be provided by Tuesday.

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Kahler
  • Hi Pranit,
The capacitors between BAT, VC10X, VC5X, and VSS are the power filter capacitors for the IC.
    1. If you do not provide power filter capacitors the device will not operate properly. The large value capacitor is due to the device architecture and is needed to keep the power supply out of the VSHUT range during heavy load or short circuit, see www.ti.com/.../slua749
    2. To perform simple operations such as reading registers the 0.1 uF may be sufficient to allow simple operation of the IC. It is unlikely to allow full operation of the device. The data sheet recommends 1 to 40 uF for the Cf capacitors, 10 uF is typical for the bq76940.
If you have smaller capacitors you can parallel capacitors for a higher capacitance.
