SM72445: How will the control handle discontinous conduction mode of the inductorcurrent?

Part Number: SM72445

Hi Youhao,

I was wondering how the control will handle discontious conduction of the inductor current?
Will it just cause a wrong MPP-Tracking, or maybe trigger the panelmode? I couldn't find anything on the datasheet on this.

Thanks,

Frieder

  • Hi Frieder,

It does not have discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), because you are using the synchronous rectifier. DCM is only the result of diode rectification or the sync FET with diode emulation control mode. The SM72445 does not have such feature, and the inductor current is always continuous.

On the other hand, why do you worry about DCM or panel mode? Even if you change your sync FET to diode, at light load it may enter DCM, but the MPPT also functions with DCM. It just commands the max power to be extracted. Panel mode is only triggered when it is in buck-boost mode and in the buck-boost mode Vin = ~Vout. Then, if it enters panel mode, you will get Vin = Vout, and this should not be a problem.

    Thanks,
    Youhao
