BQ24133: lead acid battery

Part Number: BQ24133
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650, BQ24172

Hi team,

Is there any concern if we use BQ24133 to charge a 12V lead acid battery?

Thanks,

Miranda

  • Hi Miranda,

The BQ24133 was designed to charge LiIon batteries with a constant current (CC) and then constant voltage (CV) charge profile. The closest regulation point to 12 V is the 12.6V using the cell pin. For long life, it is generally recommended that lead acid batteries be charged with CC to a higher voltage and then allowed to self discharge to a lower recharge point, effectively exercising the battery as shown below.

The BQ24133 cannot be modified externally to achieve the profile above, only to charge to 12.6V.  The BQ24172 or BQ24650 could be modified, due to their external feedback resistors for setting regulation voltage, to achieve the profile above.  In fact, I coauthored an appnote to modify the BQ24650 to charge LiIon batteries.

    Regards,

    Jeff
