CSD18535KCS: TO-220 package limited current clarification

Part Number: CSD18535KCS

The package limited abs max Id current is stated to be 200A in the datasheet for this device. This seems large considering the size of the leads for the TO-220 package. Is the 200A rating only good for a fraction of a second? If so, is there a way to approximate max continuous Id assuming very good heat sinking?

Hi Lucas,
Thanks for the questions. Please refer to this blog: e2e.ti.com/.../understanding-mosfet-data-sheets-part-3. We do not recommend operating the FET at 200A continuous drain current (>= 100ms). In the industry, FET datasheets have included these ratings for a long time although they are not practical. The maximum continuous current in an application is very much dependent on the power dissipation, ambient environment and thermal impedance (i.e. capability to remove heat from the package). Take a look at parts 4 and 6 of the same blog series: e2e.ti.com/.../MOSFET+Blog+Series. These cover thermal impedance and pulsed current ratings.
