BQ24773: Individual Cell Balancing in a 4 cell pack and State of Charge(SOC) monitoring

Part Number: BQ24773
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQ40Z50-R2

Dear Sir,

We are intending to use the BQ24773 in a portable electronic equipment for Battery Management.

Brief details of the Project is mentioned below:

1)Input to BQ24773: 18V to 22V
2)Type of Battery:3 Li-Ion battery pack
3)System VOltage: 12V to 14V
4)Max. System current: 2A
5)Max. Battery Charging current: 2A

The requirements/queries regarding this IC are

1)Does BQ24773 support Cell Balancing. If Not, kindly suggest any Texas Instruments Part
to be used along with BQ24773

2)How to monitor the current state of battery(percentage of charge left)

3)Is it necessary to monitor the battery temperature along with Voltage to ensure safety?

We look forward to you response,

Regards,

Sunil Kumar

  • Sunil,

Based on your project specification, I think BQ24773 can support your system and battery. But based on your question, I think you should have gas gauge to support your requirement.

1)Does BQ24773 support Cell Balancing. If Not, kindly suggest any Texas Instruments Part

to be used along with BQ24773

Ans: No, I will suggest you can use BQ40z50 for cell mornitor and balance function

2)How to monitor the current state of battery(percentage of charge left)

Ans: There is analog output pin (pin8) for customer to monitor charge current. But you should use MCU to read this pin voltage level to calculate.

Buffered battery current selected by SMBus/I2C. V(IBAT) = 20 × (V(SRP) – V(SRN)) for charge current, or V(IBAT) = 8 or 16 × (V(SRN) – V(SRP)) for discharge current, with ratio selectable through SMBus/I2C. Place 100pF or less ceramic decoupling capacitor from IBAT pin to GND. This pin can be floating if not in use. Its output voltage is clamped below 3.3 V.

3)Is it necessary to monitor the battery temperature along with Voltage to ensure safety?

Ans: I think it is necessary and you can read temperature data via BQ40z50.

    Thanks

  • Hi sir
As u suggested the bq40z50 IC is not recomanded for new design can u please suggest us to another IC with a same functionality feature of cell balencing
  • Hi
    Please try BQ40z50-R2.
    Thanks
  • Hi
    Thanks to click resolved.
