TPS7A4701EVM-094: current limit

Part Number: TPS7A4701EVM-094

In the user guide for TPS7A4701EVM-094, it mentions "before connecting the input power supplyto the EVM,verify that the output voltage is set to the desired supply voltage(+3 V to +35 V range)and that it is current limited to 2 A". Does this mean I need to use a current limiting circuit before it as I am planning to supply power with a 10amp rated supply?

  • Hi Khup,

The current flowing through a linear regulator is determined by the load rather than the upstream supply. As such, it is okay to use a power supply that is rated for 10 A to power the TPS7A4701. It is important to limit the load current to the rated current for TPS7A4701 which is 1 A.

The statement about setting the current limit for the upstream supply to 2 A is meant as a recommended precaution. Setting the current limit for the upstream supply provides additional protection should there be a fault in your application such as an unintended short.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
  • Hi Ryan,
    Thanks for the explanation,
