TPS2546: if CDP mode can use for charging and transfering data at the same time

Part Number: TPS2546

Hi,

My customer is having two questions:

1. if TPS2546 can charging and transfer data at the same time in CDP mode?

If it's not CDP mode, what is the mode can support charging and data transfer at the same time?

2. they need 2.1 A for current limit, the fig39 show current goes up to 1.5A, will the current still follow BC1.2 protocol if setting the current limit to 2.1A?

Will it be climbing like the following capture?

Great thanks for your help.

  • Hello,
    1. CDP mode is the mode that allows for charging and data transfer. There are three charging modes with BC1.2:
    - Charging Downstream Port (CDP)
    - Standard Downstream Port (SDP)
    - Dedicated Charging Port (DCP)
CDP and SDP both allow for data transfer, with the only difference being that CDP can offer up to 1.5A of charging while SDP can offer 500mA for USB2.0 and 900mA for USB 3.0. DCP does not offer data transfer but can charge up to 1.5A.

    2. If the TPS2546 is set in CDP mode, the current will not rise above the 1.5A current limit. If the TPS2546 was in DCP_Auto mode, the current can go to the 2.1A limit if a non-compliant charging mode was negotiated (Divider 1 and 1.2V Mode)

    Hope this answers your question!
  • Hi Adam,

Thanks for your help to reply.

From your answer, it means that if we are using TPS2546 for 5V @ 2.1A static, we will need to set it in DCP_auto mode?

    Thank you.
  • Correct. Certain legacy mobile devices use proprietary charging modes that are not complaint with BC1.2 standards, but they are so common in industry, that our chargers need to be able to support them. So while the DCP charging mode is only capable of charging up to 1.5A, when the device is in DCP_Auto mode, it will determine if a non-compliant device with a unique charging scheme is connected, advertise that specific charging type (Divider 1 and 1.2V mode) and begin charging the connected device at a higher current rate.

However, when the TPS2546 is in DCP_Auto mode, the data line are disconnected so there is not way to send data at the same time of charging at 2.1A.
