Automotive LDO Suggestion

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A16-Q1

Hi team,

May I know TI's LDO has fully protection for output short circuit? In my case, we need 24VDC convert to 12VDC / 60mA for ouput spec and wide input rang up to 60VDC for load dump.

Looks TPS7A16-Q1 is suitable for our application, but output short circuit implement by thermal shut down, responds is slowly. Could you help us to suggest best solution? thanks!

  • Hi ,

There will be a finite period of time for current limit and thermal shutdown protections to engage for any LDO. Both of these blocks are for fault protection only and are not intended for normal operation. Care should be taken when designing your application to reduce the risk of a short on the output. Please note that these are different functions. For TPS7A16-Q1 the current limit protection will limit the current flowing through the pass-FET to 225 mA (typ). If the short on the output is not removed, the regulator will enter thermal shutdown due to the additional power dissipation. Thermal shutdown will activate when the junction temperature reaches ~170 C. The length of time before thermal shutdown engages
will depend on the ambient temperature and the heatsinking ability of the PCB.

Unfortunately we do not have any other automotive qualified LDOs that are rated for 60 V.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
