Is it possible to distinguish between open-load and a short?
If yes can you explain me how?

Unfortunately this seems difficult because this device does not have current sensing output. WE do have many other parts that have the current sensing output that would be able to do this functionality.

Can you confirm this possibility the customer found out:
Switching the input to low and the error comes again(as there is a 15k pull-up at the output) it was an OpenLoad else it was a short.
Does this work reliably?

Bernd,

You are correct if you have an external pullup resistor and toggle input, if FAULT pin stays low then it is an open load. If it does not then it is a short.
