TPS2388: Short circuit detection

Part Number: TPS2388
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23861

Hi,

As per TPS2388 EVM ,  the PSE controller design based on  802.3at, If I connect 802.3af based devices, If any short circuit happened on 802.3af PD device, How It will be detect that shot circuit current in 802.3af?

If I need to change  current sense resistor in PSE controller as per maximum classification current?  or based on PD Classification resistor it will automatically detect the short circuit current at 802.3af device?

  • Hi Vignesh,

TPS2388 is able to classify the Type 1 PD( 802.3af based devices) as class 0 -3 and will limit the port power to class 3 (15.4W). So if there's any short condition happens, the PSE is able to limit the current to 1X foldback curve and shut down the port when times out. Please see more information about current protection in this FAQ and TPS23861 has similar protection mechanism with TPS2388. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Penny
