IC Charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25703A, BQ40Z50, BQ40Z50-R1

Hello!

I’m looking for an advice in choosing 1S-3S LiFePO4 charger IC that will operate in 12V-24V range. The IC must have all kinds of cell protections(overvoltage, undervoltage and overcurrent) and also an external thermistor for cell temperature monitoring. It will be great if the IC will also be capable to calculate and store the battery pack capacity.

The most fitting for my requirements I was able to find are the (BQ25703A)

Thanks and best regards,
Mikhail

  • Hey Mikhail,

The BQ25703A does not have any form of temperature monitoring and it does not calculate battery capacity. You will likely need a combination of a charger and fuel gauge in order to implement any State of Charge measurement. I would also suggest a fuel gauge, such as the BQ40z50 which also has an integrated protection function to help prevent undervoltage/overdisharge events.

You combine the BQ25703A with the BQ40z50 fuel gauge and protector, and a separate host controller in order to get information on State of Charge (SoC), implement the charging and discharging protections, and also have the temperature monitoring capability.

In this case, the host controller will make decisions for the charger.

  • May be you can advice another fuel gauge ICs for single LiFePO4 cell?

Are there any highly integrated all-in-one solutions with charger, fuel gauge and protection?
    Do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Mikhail

  • Hey Mikhail,

At a minimum you will need a two-chip solution + a host controller in order to implement all the features you want.

And the gauging profile for this gauge and protector can be programmed and updated to match your specific LiFePO4 cell, instead of Li-ion.

I still recommend this solution to provide you with gauging, cell balancing, protection and using the charger, a complete BMS.

I do want to correct the part number for the gauge + protector: it is BQ40z50-R1
