BQ78350-R1: max cell capacity supported by BQ78350-r1

Part Number: BQ78350-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76920EVM, , BQ76920, BQ4050

I am building a battery pack consisting of 4 52Ah. 3.73V  Liion batteries. I have been using the bq76920evm and have hooked up to my batteries and am trying to configure

The max design capacity in register 0x45CC is lower than my cell capacity. Is there a way to scale this. Or do I need to change devices?

  • Hi William,
Yes, the data range of the gauges is limited. With the bq78350-R1 or other gauges current scaling would be needed to fit the capacity into the data range. IPSCALE allows a 10x factor, but does not work right with -R1. Version -R2 is available for download which improves IPSCALE. Or you can scale by another factor, 2x would seem to fit the capacity into the range, your system must be aware of that.
For 4 cells you might consider the bq4050. It will have similar data range limits and scaling approaches, but offers a more compact implementation. If your high capacity also results in high current, the bq76920/bq78350-Rx solution may allow easier interface to FET drivers.
