BQ34110: Battery Test tool

Hi Luigi,
How do you intend using the alert pin to drive the charge mosfet? The device is not one that your host can send a command to asert the alert pin at the onset of charging.

I am in a preliminary design phase in which I have to define the feasibility of the project with a propose for the architecture.

I was thinking to program the ALERT pins for some kind of charge/discharge protection (e.g. End of Charge, End of Discharge)...is this feasible in your opinion in order to do repeated cycles of charge/discharge?

Otherwise how could I proceed in the architecture for such a system?

you will want to control the charge and discharge fet using gpio of your host controller after reading the battery status from the gauge. I don't believe you can configure the gauge such that the alert pin drives the fets

Are there mosfet drivers (as BQ76200) that can be used as battery pack protection (using ALERT pin) and that can also add Over-Current protection to the system? I do not have an host MCU to control, so I need a stand-alone solution, and the battery pack will be made by 1S or 2S cells (all possible chemistries to date).

I was just wondering if are the protections really needed by 1S or 2S battery packs, as they should already have their PCM circuits...
In this latter case, BQ34110 should be all the necessary for charge/discharge safely Li-Ion/LiFePO4/NiMH/NiCd...

In this case, if you already have battery "packs" and not cells, you do not need additional protection for the cells. The packs should have primary protection ICs and potentially secondary protection ICs. I would confirm with your pack maker.

OK, but what if I have only 1S or 2S cells to manage?
How can I add the missing protection to BQ34110?

That device doesn't come with protection.

I would look into primary protection ICs for 1S: bq29700 or bq2980.

The secondary protection ICs are also on ti.com's search tool.

The bq34110 is just a gauging device with no protection capabilities. I am looping in our marketing team here.

No, I don't know of any that we offer. We don't have a one chip to fit all solution as these are OTP spins.

Ok, I can try to simplify my specifications:
1) are there primary protection ICs for 1S cell, that can work with BQ34110 and hopefully multi chemistry support?
2) are there primary protection ICs for 1S cell, that can work with BQ34110 and only Li-Ion batteries?
3) are there primary protection ICs for 1S cell, that can work with BQ34110 and only PbA, NiMH and NiCd batteries?

In this way I can provide different setup configurations following battery chemistry.
