BQ24780SEVM-583: Battery Discharge current goes to Zero

Part Number: BQ24780SEVM-583
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24780S

Hi Team,

I am using the BQ24780SEVM for smart battery charge and discharge cycle. I have set the value 1% RSOC to charge the battery again, while discharging the battery at 1A discharge current the battery voltage reaches 12.4V  and the RSOC is 3%.During this state  the discharge current  automatically goes to zero..

Used following below setting:

1) ChargeOption0  resistor value is 0x0108. while charging,

2) ChargeOption0  resistor value is 0x0129; while discharging.

Expecting Your reply at the earliest.

Regards,

Vel

  • Hello Vel,

When you say you are going through a discharge cycle, are you putting the BQ24780s in "Battery Learn" mode? If so, the discharge cycle will end when the battery voltage reaches the battery depletion threshold set in Charge Option 1 Register (0x3B) bits [15:14]. Likewise, this same battery depletion threshold is applied when the device is in turbo boost mode and the device will exit turbo boost mode (where battery supplements the adapter) when the battery depletion threshold is reached.

Is either of the situations applicable and is it possible that you are reaching this battery depletion threshold? This is the only condition in which the BQ24780s should terminate battery discharge.

I am not quite certain what you mean by RSOC -- are you referring to the Relative State of Charge setting of a gauge IC? Is it possible that the gauge IC is terminating the discharge? If so, can you please post a question to the gauge IC forum under that part number? Different teams support the charger and gauge ICs, so our team will not be able to answer gauge-related questions as well as they can.

    Regards,
    Steve
