UC2854BM: Why is a Schottky Barrier Rectifier needed for GTDRV pin?

Part Number: UC2854BM

Dear Sirs or Madams,

On the Typical Application shown on the datasheet, a Schottky Barrier Rectifier 1N5820 is implemented

between GTDRV pin and GND.

Please let me know the reason why a Schottky Barrier Rectifier is needed.

Is this needed to prevent transient excessive voltage on GTDRV pin?

Or, are there any other reasons?

Best regards,

Shinsuke Tanaka

  • Hey Shinsuke,

The Schottky diode is needed to prevent large negative voltage spikes on the pin.

There is a worry that the undershoot of the pin will cause a negative voltage which will reverse bias the ESD protection.

We recommend the diode is kept for this reason.

    Thanks,

    Daniel
