TPS2373: Accurate current control in PMP20878

Part Number: TPS2373
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP20878

Hi,

My customer needs to know for  PMP20878 how the feed-forward regulation can be tuned optimally in order to ensure that 1.0A is both requested and approved by PSE, but not surpassed at the PSE side.

The customer does not want to having to set 0.8A request just to make sure that 1.0A is not surpassed at the PSE.

In short; how should he calculate/design for the current margins in the PMP20878 to stay as close as possible to 1.0A but not violate that limit?

Thanks for your help.  M.A.M

  • Hi Magnus,

Is the customer looking to regulate current to within 1A or a hard current limit at 1A? The PD hotswap FET operational current limit is intended to catch faults, so it is set higher than the expected max current of a class power range & will turn off the FET immediately.

This PD operational current limit cannot be changed, although, TPS2373-3 can be used (due to its lowered operational current limit) if the customer is intending on using up to class 6 (51W input) power levels.

The current regulation would be managed by the PSE since it controls voltage being sent & the negotiated power being delivered.

    Thank,
