BQ76920: low side switching or high side switching. which one should prefer and why?

Part Number: BQ76920

Dear sir/madam,

I'm currently working on BMS project., First, let me tell you bq769XX products are awesome, HAts off to TI.,

Now main part,

Bq76920 support low side switching of power MOSFET. but in many of Ti sample circuits HIGH side is shown. so which one should prefer and why so?.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Nikhil,

I'm glad to hear you are finding the bq769xx products very useful. The decision for high-side or low-side FETs really depends on your system needs. Low-side FETs are easier to implement with the BQ76920, but the main concern is that the microcontroller may not be able to communicate with the outside world (for example, if a charger needs to communicate with the pack before allowing charging to occur) because the battery and system ground will no longer be electrically connected when the FETs are open. In this case, high-side FETs may be better.
