Battery charger IC selection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25887, BQ77915, BQ25713

Hi

I am looking for a charger IC that have power path and cell balancing feature for charging of Li ion battery (18650), with the spec of

input voltage 4.5-12V

output voltage 5V/12V

output power ~10W

and the closest I've found is BQ25887 but is only for 2S charging, where I want to design for an application for 3S/4S battery pack.

Does that means there will always be 2 set of IC circuitry for charging the battery pack? the charger and the cell balancer.

As I am know little about battery charging, is there other things that I should take note of but missed? eg. battery protection

Thank you

  • Hi, I believe there is some error with the component filtering function

  • Hi CC,

The BQ25887 is the only charger with integrated cell balancing for 2S LiIon. TI has many other chargers capable of 3S charging. What is your input voltage for the charger, desired charge current, and do you have a host capable of I2C communication?

Some of our protectors have cell balancing. BQ77915 is one such device. Does your 18650 battery pack have integrated protector? If not, I recommend adding a protector with cell balancing.

    Regards,
    Jeff
  • I am looking for charger with both cell balancing and power path feature.

The 18650 pack does not have integrated protector.

The input voltage to charger available is 5V/12V/24V,
the output voltage can be of battery voltage,
the peak output power of ~10W is required, but nominal will be ~5W,
an high efficiency charger is needed, preferably at least 90% at available input voltage and at nominal output power
a host capable of I2C is available.

If bq77915 is used, does that mean the Pack+ and Pack- can be treated as a standalone battery but not multicell battery?

Can you recommend a suitable 3S/4S charger?

    Thank you
  • CC,

Unfortunately, I do not support the protector/cell balancing products. I suggest that you submit a new e2e post with that IC part number.

Regarding a charger, the BQ25713 is an 12C controlled buck/boost charge controller (meaning it uses external FETs) that can boost from 5V and 12V or buck from 24V down to charge 3S/4S.

    Regards,
    Jeff
  • CC,

I haven't heard from you in a while. I hope you were able to submit a new post and get answers regarding the BQ77915. I will close this post.

    Regards,
    Jeff
