BQ24259: clarifications for the specs and working

Part Number: BQ24259
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24295,

Hi,

i am working on development of an application, wherein, i will be having an external regulated 5v supply (NOT USB) and i need to power up the system, which in absence of the supply will be powered on from a rechargeable li ion battery. i am considering PMIC BQ24295 for this application. The budgeted system current will be 1.5A max and the battery charging current will be set to 650mA. Now i have some experience with these kind of ICs, though from MAXIM INTEGRATED ( MAX77818 ) and not from TI and i understand the specs and architecture, still i would like to get some clarification for the specs. below are my points of concern

1) The Isys, which is the o/p for system can give a max of 3.5A. Is this the current which can be supplied to the system directly from the input through BUCK FET PAIR (q2 and q3)? and if so, can a direct 5v input be used to power up the system in absence of battery ( which was possible with the MAX IC  that i have worked with previously ). and which in terms means that if the sys current is less than set input through ILIM, it should power up the system and can charge the battery as well, though not at 650mA CC? ( i am assuming power conservation with around 80% effeciency for this )

2) As my system has a few 5V peripherals with a budgeted current requirement of 100mA peak, can this IC to get the power for that? as of now, i am planning to use a different boost IC ( FAN4860 due to its low cost, which is a facor considered as quantity is 40k ) for that rail. would be good to have this feature, just like power bank ICs with reverse boost.

Please refer to below image for architecture understanding. i know from datasheet that sys and batt are connected through q4.

Thank you in advance. i will be looking out for some more options. so i am open to suggestions.

  • Hi,

BQ24259 is a 2-A charger. It can handle up to 2A total current, i.e. the sum of the charging current (Ichg) and the system current (Isys). BQ24295 is better because it is a 3-A charger. Which one are you inquiring about?

    Thanks,

    Ning.

  • Hello Ning,
Thank you for the prompt reply.
My primary consideration is BQ24259, as the peak current i need will be less than 2 A. So is it safe to consider that even in absence of a battery, the system can be powered up and be delivered with 1.5A of current, considering the input current limit is fixed at 1.5A? ( i reckon it is but would be pleased to get a confirmation on this )
Also how about the 5V reverse boost? Can bq24259 do this?
  • Hi,

Referring to page 7 of the d/s, the input limit is set to 100mA when VSYS is below 2.2V. Please do not overload SYS before VSYS reaches 2.2V especially when a battery is absent.

Yes, BQ24259 support OTG (boost) mode. Please refer to 8.3.1.5 Boost Mode Operation from Battery on the d/s for the details.

    Thanks,

    Ning.
