TPS74801: over current waveform and behavior

Part Number: TPS74801

Hi Sir,

Please help explain the OCP waveform for TPS74801.

I increased the I_load slowly by electronic load until OC.

What is the TPS74801 behavior in area 1, 2 and 3?

TPS74801 will auto retry if in the OCP status, right?

Thank you.

Amos

  • Hi Amos,

Section 1 is showing the current limit behavior of TPS748. When you reach current limit, the load will begin to pulldown the output voltage because your load is pulling more current out of Vout node than the LDO is sourcing. This will cause the output capacitors to discharge.

In sections 2 and 3 it appears that you are cycling into and out of thermal shutdown. Due to the high current, the power dissipation in the LDO will increase. This will in turn cause the junction temperature to increase. When the junction temperature reaches the thermal shutdown threshold, the LDO will disable the pass FET until the LDO can cool down.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
