BQ24072: clarifications for the specs and working along with schematic verification

Part Number: BQ24072

Hello,

i am working on a battery application wherein the system needs to be flexible so that it can work with as well as without battery. The input to the IC will be from 5V regulated source. The budgeted current is around 1.3A ( peak. Majority of time it will be less than 1A) to the system. The IC needs to be standalone. I am considering BQ24072 for the application. So in this direction i have made a design. The battery charging current will be around 0.5A, which for the application will be 0.5C. So the queries i have are listed below.

1) Can this IC support this application WITHOUT Battery?

2) If yes, please verify the schematic for the same.

Looking forward.

Siddhesh P

  • Hello,
Yes. When the battery is absent, the system will be powered from the input. Since the BQ24072 is a power path device, the system is given priority. The device will be running the battery detection routine on the BAT pin when the battery is absent which wont interfere with system load requirement.
I dont see any issues with the schematic but note that you currently have termination disabled.
  • hello Sharafadeen Raheem,

thank you for the reply. If i understand, the datasheet properly, while TD connected to VSS and battery not connected, the output voltage will be maintained at around 3.5V with small shoots of battery detection routine. Will they affect the IC as well as the output in anyway at higher loading current of 1.2A and above (this is because bq24072 is a linear charger instead of being a switcher)?

  • Hello,
Your understanding is correct. The device should be able to output 1.2A with the battery absent. The current will be limited by the input current limit of 1.5A.
