TPS61165: TPS61165 EasyScale not working on all steps and basic PWM not working to 0%.

Part Number: TPS61165

Hi,

I am using the tps61165 to drive a high brightness LED and want to be able to dim the LED. i wanted from 0 to 100%. i tried basic PWM at 10kHz but could not get it to operate. if ctrl is low for more than 2.5mS which it will be when the PWM is 0% the chip goes into  EasyScale mode then cannot be used as basic PWM. not really very useful i think. i did not realise the PWM did not work down to 0% when i selected the driver.

Before i dump the current driver, as i have hardware built and testing, and go for an alternative silicon solution i have managed to get the EasyScale mode to work. However i can only get 16 dimming steps not the 32 i should be.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Mark

  • Hi Mark,
We don't suggest to use the Easy_Scale Mode and we will update the datasheet to new version with below commons soon:
" After the EasyScale detection delay (tes_delay, 100 μs) expires, drive CTRL low for more than the EasyScale detection time (tes_det, 260 μs). tes_det and tes_delay values are conservative to guarantee the EasyScale detection even in for process and clock variations. To ensure not to enter EasyScale mode, please make sure CTRL pin is never held low for more than 160us."
For your PWM dimming with 10kHz, I can't understand why you enter into Easy_Scale Mode. TPS61165 can support 0% to 100% dimming duty cycle with 10kHz.
