TPS798-Q1: Can it use it as a constant current source

Part Number: TPS798-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A4101

Hi LDO team,

Question 1:

Can TPS798 be used as a constant current source as shown in the diagram, please?

Question 2:

Will the LDO be stable as the capacitor between OUT and FB is missing?

Regards,
Jason

  • Hi Jason,

Yes this is very similar to a circuit we had in the TPS7A4101 datasheet.  You can certainly apply the same concepts to the TPS798-Q1 (or any other LDO); however, it is important to make sure you remain within the recommended operating conditions region for TPS798-Q1 including capacitors required for stability and the input voltage requirements local to the IN pin.  As you are using the TPS798-Q1 in unity gain, you will not require the feedforward capacitor between OUT and FB, but you will still need to meet the minimum output capacitor.

It is also important to note that while we do not foresee any issue using TPS798-Q1 in this way, we do still recommend prototyping.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan
