BQ24192: PCM Recommendation

Part Number: BQ24192
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27531-G1,

Hello TI power management forum,

I have a question concerning lithium ion battery protection. We're developing a charger product derived from the BQ24192 & BQ27531 typical application schematic (bq27531-g1.pdf figure 12). Our application will use five 18650 Li-Ion cells in parallel (in other words, a 1s5p configuration). We were wondering if TI had any recommendations for battery safety provisions beyond what's reflected in the typical application schematic. We are considering using raw 18650 cells without an integrated PCM (protection circuit module) or battery-leveling circuit.

Any comments about the BQ24192's suitability in a 1s5p raw Li-Ion cell application would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Jeffrey Dowell

  • I should note that we are using an NTC (Semitec 103AT-4) attached directly to the middle of the 5-cell 18650 battery pack. The circuit for the battery pack is reflected below. The thermistor will be connected in the same manner as the TS_GAUGE port in fig12 of the typical application schematic.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

We should have answered your questions at e2e.ti.com/.../792237. The BQ24192 design should work ok as long as you follow the d/s and EVM design.

It is highly recommended to use protection circuit for battery safety. The fuel gauge experts should be able to give you more suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Ning.
