BQ76920: Looking for 6 cells controller

Part Number: BQ76920
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930, BQ76925

Hello team,

I have an UPS application in the industrial world; I'm looking for a battery controller that could balance 6 cells chemistry PB and the battery voltage is 12V. Do you believe this is a suitable device?

If not, could you please suggest me one?

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,

Adrian

  • Hi Adrian,
The bq76920 supports only 5 cells and would not be suitable. The bq76930 is similar and can support 6 cells, but it is intended for use with Li ion cells, at nominal voltage for the lead-acid it would be at its minimum recommended voltage.
The bq76925 is also intended for Li ion cells, but it supports 6 cells and has a recommended input range down to 1.4V/cell so it may be usable. A MCU with an ADC is needed.
  • Hi,

    thank you for your reply!
Are the BQ76930 and BQ76925 suitable for Pb chemistry? Sorry but it wasn't clear to me.

    Thank you for your support.
    Best regards,
    Adrian
  • Hi Adrian,
The bq76930 is not suitable for Pb chemistry.
The bq76925 is not intended for Pb but could measure cells due to the voltage range. Cell balancing should work but notice in the data sheet it is specified at 3.6V.
It is uncommon to measure individual Pb cells, balancing is often allowed through water loss at high voltage.
