LMR33630-Q1: maximum load current 85deg

Part Number: LMR33630-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR33630

Hi~

In LMR33630-Q1 datasheet, Fig.23 shows that max load current vs ambient current.

Even though consider Rtheta_JA=50dec/W(realistic PCB), max load current at 85deg is just about 2.2A.

Does it means LMR33630 cant cover at all up to 3A full load at 85deg condition?

Or is there any way to support 3A at 85deg by increasing copper or any other way?

(In Fig.22, even though use large copper area, Rtheta_Ja can't reduced below 48deg, so looks limitation.)

Thanks.

  • Jin-Suk Choi,

Your analysis is correct. LMR33630-Q1 will probably exceed 125C at 3A / 85C in many conditions. You may achieve this with a very good thermal layout and 4oz copper but this may be too much to ask.

We have also seen automotive customers who can use the metal fixture to drop a pillar onto the IC as a heatsink. We have not done measurements on a setup like this yet but it would definitely help if that's an option.
