BQ24616: Output Current

Part Number: BQ24616

I’ve set my charge current to 2A for my BQ24616 design but the IC is outputting about 3A. The voltage VIset1 = 0.396V when there’s no battery connected. However, the voltage changes to 0.46V - 0.49V when a battery or load is connected. The 3.3V reference voltage for Iset1 does not change with or without load. I’d like your assistance in solving this issue.

  • Hi Charyne,
What is the value of the sense resistor between SRP and SRN? Are you measuring 3A charge current, or 3A total current supplied to your load and the battery? What is voltage on ACSET?
  • Hi Kedar,

The sense resistor is 10mOhms. I don't have a system load. 3A is the supplied current to the battery. ACSET is 252mV with no battery and 360mV with a battery. ISET2 is 250mV with no battery and 362mV with a battery.

  • Hi,

I've attached the measurements I recorded per our conversation. Let me know if you have issues viewing this.

  • Hi Charyne,
There seems to be a DC shift in the ground reference of around 0.9V which is throwing everything off, and can only be layout related. As the PGND/AGND voltages are similar, the issue does not seem to be related to too much impedance between AGND and PGND causing a ground shift relative to each other by current passing through each other. Nothing needs to be changed in the schematic, but layout needs to be reviewed. Lauren will send you the gerber files for the EVM, so you can follow that layout as closely as possible, and this will resolve the current issue.
