TPS40170RGYR thermal issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40170

Hi

I use TPS40170RGYR to my design 12-48V input to 3.3V, but when 48v input cause thermal issue.

I want to know the what is the current through the LDO inside the TPS40170RGYR and the curve for input voltage vs TPS40170RGYR thermal

thanks

  • Smith,

The VIN pin goes straight to the LDO so the input current to the VIN pin is the current through the LDO. You can measure this to find your answer.

We do not have a curve for input voltage vs thermal because thermal depends on many other factors. The curve would not be true for most cases since layout, output current, FET selection... vary so much from design to design. The TPS40170 is a controller which means the FETs are not internal to the IC. Controllers typically have less issue with overheating since most of the heat is in the FETs. How hot is your TPS40170 getting and in what conditions (ambient temp...)
