ISO5452: Help in choosing IGBT driver will miller clamp ?

Part Number: ISO5452
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO5451, UCC23513, UCC5350, , ISO5852S

Hi,

This is a question which is a followup to the one here .

I have shortlisted the following gate drivers: ISO5451, ISO5452 , ISO 5852S, UCC5350,UCC23513  . We would like to have a driver with a miller clamp and if possible an optional IGBT Desat protection. Can I have some suggestions so that I can shortlist this to the last two IGBT drivers that I can evaluate?

Also, what should I look into when selecting a driver for better miller clamp based protection.

Regards,

Tony .

  • Hello Tony,

I have included some of the key parameters you mentioned to compare the drivers in your list in the table below.

    ISO5451 ISO5452 ISO5852S UCC5350MC UCC23513
    Miller Clamp (I_CLAMP) Yes (2.5A) Yes (2.5A) Yes (2.5A) Yes (10A) No
    Drive Strength (Source/Sink) +2.5A/-5A +2.5A/-5A +2.5A/-5A +10A/-10A +4.5A/-5.3A
DESAT (V_DESAT) Yes (9V) Yes (9V) Yes (9V) No No

As you can see, the ISO5xxx parts have more integrated features you are looking for; i.e. both Miller Clamp and DESAT. The benefit of UCC5350MC is the higher drive strength and higher Miller Clamp current. Higher clamp current is one of the key parameters to look for in the Miller clamp. If more current can be re-directed through the clamp, then it is better to prevent gate voltage spikes, but the actual level depends on the Miller current you expect to see in your system. Additionally, it is best if the driver is located close to the IGBT for best clamping performance. It seems that the ISO5xxx parts fit your requirements more closely. If the drive strength is not sufficient for your application, you can add a buffer circuit as shown in Section 10.2.2.11.

Please let us know if you have additional questions!

    Audrey

  • Thanks Audrey . That helped a lot.
