BQ24295: Depleted/Open battery detection

Part Number: BQ24295

Hi -

I need to detect whether there is an open battery (none connected) or a depleted battery for my system. Depleted should be pretty easy by just sensing the battery voltage, but I haven't figured a way to detect a disconnected battery. With no battery, I sense about 4.1V on the BAT pin, about 70mV lower than VSYS. Is this a body diode conducting? Or is the BATFET on? Is there any way you can think of to sense an open battery?

Thanks

Michael

  • Michael,

When the charging is dsabled, Q4 FET is open and you should measure a clsoe to 0 voltage at BAT. If the charging is enabled, the BATFET is ON (charging ) or OFF (terminated). BAT pin voltage could swing bewteen fully charged volatge VBATREG and (VBATREG - Vrecharge).
