BQ24170: Circuit diagram for the connection of 2S LiPo Battery to the ICs VBAT Output .

Part Number: BQ24170

Hello Everyone,

I am using the BQ24170 for designing a 2S Lipo charger. Now, while designing from the reference circuit diagram, I am unsure about the battery connection to the output (VBAT).

I am not sure whether I should keep a provision to connect the Battery's Charge/Discharge leads (to VBAT) or  if I should keep a provision to connect the 'Balance charging port' to the VBAT output or if I should do both.

Can you suggest the relevant circuit diagram for the output connection (VBAT) with the battery?

  • Rajarshi,

Based on your question, it appears that your 2S battery has two connection points, charge/discharge and balance port. The balance port is likely the mid point between the 2 stacked cells. If so, then you would connect the output of the BQ24170 (SRN pin) to the charge/discharge lead.

    Regards,

  • Hello Jeff,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think this is my battery's connection. So I believe if I plug in Pin 1 and 3 of the Balance Port to the respective BQ24170 output, it will charge the batteries too(instead of using the Charge/Discharge Port). So, one thing is certain, our BQ24170 doesn't support balance charging. Right?

Refer to the below diagram for reference.

  • Rajarshi,

Yes, if you connect to those pins, the batteries will charge. Balancing is usually at much lower currents so that connector may be highly resistive and lead to longer charge times as charge current increases.

    Jeff
