USB and solar cell Li+ battery charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24030, BQ24040, BQ24166, BQ24210, BQ24032A

Hi

Looking for the best IC for designing a dual input (USB and solar cell) battery charger for a small IOT device. The charging rate would 0,5 C maximun and MPPT is not mandatory . Is there any options based on TI devices?

  • Hi Gilberto,

The only dual input chargers TI has are BQ24166 (switching) and BQ24030 (linear) but both have IBAThiz=~50uA. For 0.5A charge current, a linear charger is my recommendation. For lower IBAThiz, you might consider single input linear chargers BQ24040 or BQ24210, which has MPPT. Both have IBAThiz<10uA.

I did not find any reference to IBAThiz on the bq24032a manual .

Can you provide more info onde ir?

  • Gilberto,

IBAThiz is the generic term for current going back into the battery when there is no input source. If you system load is much higher than that during battery only mode, it is likely not a concern for you. I actually looked at the wrong line for the BQ24032A. It is called ICCslp and it is very low too (5uA max).
