BQ24618: What is minimum difference between Vin and Vout?

Part Number: BQ24618

I am thinking BQ24618 as a charger for 3-cell battery (12.6V), and BQ24618 datasheet tells it's BUCK converter. I tried to find what the Vin minimum to fully charge 3-cell battery, but unfortunately I could not find such parameter in datasheet; the typical application in datasheet uses 19V for 3-cell, 19V is too high for my power source selection, please advise what Vin-Vout minimum drop voltage is.

Yunfa

  • Hi Yunfa,

You are correct that BQ24618 is a buck charger, and will need an input voltage higher than battery voltage. The key specification you want to look at in the datasheet, is the condition for charger to enter SLEEP mode, which is when converter will turn off to minimize quiescent current, if input voltage is not high enough to charge battery. Please refer to the SLEEP comparator section of the electrical characteristics table of the datasheet, as well as section 10.Power Supply Recommendations of the datasheet, and using these 2 sections you can determine if your power source is valid for this application.
