BQ51050B: Small Battery/Wearable Charging

Part Number: BQ51050B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25100, BQ51003, TIDA-00318

I am designing for a tiny device application which requires a battery in the 240mAh.  The charge current will be 200mA.  I have seen a number of supprt requests for the low current operation, but I do not see the relevant specification in the datasheet.  The BQ51050B is attractive since it eliminates the additional battery charger.  Could you clarify what or where are the limitations at these 1W power levels?

  • Hello
The BQ51050B is targeted at higher power applications with 1A charge currents. Characterization and design of the device were with this in mind.
Device can be used at lower charge current, 200mA should not be a problem.
But termination at lower current is difficult due to accuracy. Recommend termination at 30mA or greater.

For smaller lower power application with more accuracy see TIDA-00318 that combines BQ51003 and BQ25100.
  • Thanks!  The current implementation implements the BQ51003 and a battery charger.
