Difference between TVS and ESD diode

Hello TI Team,

I came across two link on TI which discusses about ESD protection.

One was using TVS diode and the other one was using ESD diode. I am confused since both are used for ESD protection then why there are two names?

Are they different from application point of view?

Please help in clarifying that.

Thanks,

Navendu Shekhar

  • Hello,
Typically in transient protection devices, the ESD diode refers to a small transient diode that just protects against the small amount of ESD energy that happens. They will have some surge protection but it is minimal.
TVS diodes are normally bigger than ESD diodes because they are more for surge protection which is a much higher energy pulse.
