TPS40170: Can Vbp be powered by an external 8V source.

According to my calculations the device is going to get too hot in my application, I can't find a MOSFET with a lower Qg and I don't want to drop the switching frequency. Is there a diode protecting the regulator? Can I connect Vbp to an external 8V source to reduce the load on the chip at high input voltages or will this damage the TPS40170?

Hello,

You can use an external bias on VBP to reduce the heat from the LDO. The bias must not exceed the abs maximum of 8.8V and must be greater than the maximum of the LDO output which is 8.3V. Also, the external bias must never exceed VIN, so VIN must not go below the external bias voltage.
