LM5118: Can LM5118 be used in a open-loop state?

Part Number: LM5118

Since my application is used in a constant 24V input voltage, can LM5118 be used in a open-loop condition?

  • Hi Ziyue,

Thank you for considering the LM5118. I am afraid the answer is no if you want to get a regulated output voltage, because in open loop the duty cycle cannot be controlled to regulate.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Youhao, thank you very much for your reply. If I don't have needs for regulation of output, can I used it in open loop?
  • Hi Ziyue,

If you don't need output regulation, why select the LM5118? I would not recommend the LM5118 in open loop application because you cannot predict the output voltage and it can be very excessively high to cause damage.

If you just want to step up, you can choose the LM5020-2 which has fixed 50% max duty and you can tell you output would be 2x Vin. If you want to step down, you can also use the LM5020-2 with 50% duty in a flyback configuration and set the output by a transformer.

    Thanks,
    Youhao
