TPS2115A: Minimum load to use this PS autoswitch?

Part Number: TPS2115A

Hello!

I am studying a way to switch two power supplies (USB vs Ext.PSU) to supply 5V a circuit which has a "low" consumption (normally 30mA or less with some short peaks of 150mA when a radio transmit).

I have found your part TPS2115A but reading the datasheet i have the doubt about the limit current and its minimum value "Nominal current limit adjustment range Iout" which appears on the Recommended Operating Conditions where the minimun current is 0.63A for TPS2115APW. I am confused because i don't know if this IC needs a minimum load to work properly or if those values don't mean what I am supposing... Well, my question is if I can use this IC even with that "low" consumption...

Many thanks in advance and best regards!

Luis

  • Hi Luis,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

The reason why 0.63A is spec'd as the "minimum current" is due to the hysteresis on the current limit. The device will work at lower currents, but the current limit feature is limited due to the hysteresis on the limit. If the current limit was brought lower, the hysteresis might prevent the device from turning on into a normal load. Therefore, the current limit hysteresis is the reason for the minimum specification.

    Thanks,

    Arthur Huang

  • Thank you so much, Arthur
Now I understand that limit range.
