BQ40Z60: Current monitoring

Part Number: BQ40Z60
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Hi all,

I work with a BQ40z60 EVM.

We use a 4 cells pack @ 3350mAh to provide power to a PC like with DLP projector embedded.

So we have 2 main state of working phase for the BQ40z60

1) PC is OFF, Power supply ON, BQ40z60 can charge the battery if necessary. The current value is 1625mA. --> Works well

2) PC is ON, (current needed by PC is 2A). If the current still set to 1625mA, battery does not charge. If I set the current to 3625mA, the battery charge at 1625mA

I don't really understand the notion of 'charging current' in the datasheet !

As I see, the charging current is the total current use by the system, not the one needed by the battery !

Am I wrong ?

If no, do we need to monitor the current charge as describe above ?

or do we have an another way to do it automatically ?

Other question :

On the firmware R3 of BQ40z50, there is a new function to use the LED/GPIO as single GPIO (to on-off a led)

Do you expect to do same function on firmware of the BQ40z60 ?and when ?

Regards

Gilles

  • Hi Gilles,
The application will receive priority over the battery charging. The CVRD_ARM MAC 0x00C1 command can be used to override this allowing your host to set the charging charging current to a higher value to allow the battery to charge at the same time as the host receiving power.

    thanks
