BQ40Z50: Advanced Charge Algorithm setting between bq2472 and bq40z50

Part Number: BQ40Z50
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2472

1. A cell's operating temperature is 0~45 degree C.

   My battery pack vendor suggest me to set the UTC  -5 degree ℃ , and T1  0 ℃; OTC 50  ℃ and T4 45  ℃

Is it correct? ( it aleady over the cell's spec on UTC and OTC)

   If I set T1 0 ℃ & T4 45 ℃, Is charging is allowed while themperature is  0 ℃ or 45 ℃?

(I found that CellTemp report 45 ℃ but the charging function still working.)

2. My system is a tablate with x86 plateform, what firmware version is suggest?

If I use R1 version, will  be any bugs happened?

3.  The typical precharging current is 500mA of charging IC,BQ24725

If I set the Pre-Charging to 200mA, Will the current down to 200mA

4. I don't see any information of  Maintenance Charging current in charging IC ,BQ24725

can the  charging IC recognize it and run it?

-The TRM of the device has detailed instructions on setting those temperature ratio
    -pls use the r3 version
-That is up to your charger and your batteries
-if it is read from the gauge then it can used. The gauge doesn't control the charger though

    thanks

  • Hi Onyx:

    Thanks for your reply.

    2. As I know  bq2472 is level 2 smart charger.  Setting the [BCAST] bit in bq40z50 will enable the broadcast of the charging voltage and current to the bq24725 for meeting the level 2 charging requirements.

I  want uses a JEITA profile to monitor the battery temperature and reduce the charge current and charge voltage accordingly.

    1. Do you know that why I set T4=45 ℃, the charging still not stop while cell themperature  is up ot 45 ℃?

    2. if I want the charging temperature range in 0 ~45 ℃, what values shoud I set? T1=0 T4=45?

  • 1. JEITA has a hysteresis. You need to be above 45C to trigger the threshold. Please check which thermistor you are monitoring as well for temperature. You need to use the cell temperature thermistor for calculations.
    2. That is correct. T1 is the lower end and T4 is the higher limit.
  • Hi Onyx:
I realy want to use R3 or R2.11 firmware verion in my battery but it is very hard to push battery suppiler to use it.
    They alway tell me that.
They have NO experience on R3 & R2.11 version. R1 is stable and no trouble found.
Only few porduct use R2.11 and no product use R3 entering mass production so far.
Furemore, the TI's vendor(agent) also recommend they are use R1 in inductrial products.

if the battery suppiler design R1 verion chip into battery, Is still R3 recommended?

If TI really recommend R3 or R2.11, could IT push TI's vendor or battery supplier to use it?
  • Unfortunately We have no control over what your vendor decides to use. We recommend, it is up to you to choose the firmware to use.
