TPS2546: How to implement 2.5A output current

Part Number: TPS2546

Hello

From Table 1 shows these Operating modes maximum current just 1.5A ,so how can I set to implement up to 2.5A output ? thanks

  • Hello Fandy,

Non-compliant charging modes such as Divider 1, Divider 2, and 1.2V mode allow for higher current capabilities which the TPS2546 support. Putting the device in DCP_Auto mode will determine if a non-compliant portable device has been connected, and advertise the higher current options, one of which allows for 2.5A of current.
  • Hi Adam
thanks for your reply, so one of Divider 1, Divider 2, and 1.2V mode could support 2.5A , and how to configured/set ?
    doing this for eample:
    Divider 1 Mode --Figure 29 (D- connect to 2.7V, D+ connect to 2.0V) ?
    Divider 2--Figure 30 ?
    1.2V --Figure31 ?
then meanwhile, set the typical current limit to 2.5A or 2.97A using Equation 1 ?
  • Divider 2 and 1.2V charging can support charging currents greater than 2A.

Yes, figure 30 and 31 show the internal circuitry for divider 2 and 1.2V mode. To change the current limiting resistor, refer to equation 1 within section 9.2.2
  • Hi Adam

How to enter Divider 2 and 1.2V mode ?   it seems enter BC1.2 mode could through control CTR1,CTL2,CTL3

I want to make output current up to 2.5A , refer equation1, set RILIM_HI  to 2.5A ? RILIM_LO set to what value ? I find Figure 40,Table4, max Iout is 2.5A,its RILIM_HI set to 2.97A

  • Hello Fandy,

Please read section 8.4.1 to understand DCP_Auto mode and how our device enters into non-compliant charging schemes based on what device is connected.
  • Hi Adam
Is my understanding right ?which mode TPS2546 enter in was based on which type equipment is connected, if my equipment type is Divider 2 or 1.2V mode , TPS2546 will enter corresponding mode automatically, no need any control of CTRL1-3, only thing I need do is set the higher current limi by RILIM_HI to make TPS2546 could provide 2.5A current ?

    refer equation1, set RILIM_HI  to 2.5A or 2.97A?  I find Figure 40,Table4, max Iout is 2.5A, but its RILIM_HI set to 2.97A
  • Yes that is correct. The TPS2546 will enter into the correct charging mode automatically, and there is nothing that needs to be done on the CTL lines besides configuring it to DCP auto.
  • Hi Adam
Question 1: so the premise is that I have to make TPS2546 enter in DCP anto mode, but how to enter DCP Auto mode ? datasheet can't find this explanation
    Question 2: refer equation1, set RILIM_HI  to 2.5A or 2.97A ?  I find Figure 40,Table4, max Iout is 2.5A, but its RILIM_HI set to 2.97A
  • Fandy,

The CTL pins control what state our device is in. Refer to Table 3 to determine what levels to put each CTL pin in order to enter into DCP_Auto mode.

You can set the current limit to something higher in the event there are current spikes for brief periods of time that you want you system to be able to withstand.
  • Hello Adam

so any one of below four config state all could provide 2.5A after set the limit exceed 2.5A ?

one more question: Divider 1 mode could be provide how much current ?

  • Yes those configs are correct.

Divider 1 can provide 1A of current
