TPS63020: Sink current path when used as TEC driver

Looking at SLVA677 Low-Power TEC Driver app note for the TPS63020 Boost/Buck converter,

This may be a very dumb question, but

I am unsure of the Sink current path when using the boost output

the VIN regulator can't sink current so does it return back through the regulators input switch ?

Hi Bill,

When the regulator operates in boost mode, the output of the regulator is sourcing current. Below are two scenarios, assuming that the TEC resistance is 1 Ω and that the regulator efficiency is 100%. Hope this makes the current paths more clear.

Interesting, I would not have thought about the .66A coming OUT of the VIN terminal in buck mode...
that might confuse me even more :)

Hi Bill,

A synchronous buck converter is bidirectional. When sinking the output current, it acts the same as a synchronous boost converter, when looking from the output to the input side.
