BQ24314A: what's happen when IC damage

Part Number: BQ24314A

Hi Sir,

My customer have some question as below,

1. When input voltage 30V and current limit set to 1A. output used electronic load  setting 1A keep 0.5H, What happen of IC ? turn off or ....?

2.When add Vin form  30,31,32...V, unit Vin pin damage,at this moment IN (pin 1)  status is short or open and other pin will damage?

3.When used item 2 damage IC used input 5V/1A, the BQ24314A will happen IC high temperature cause IC burning up?

Thanks

  • You can either have a short or open depending on the mode of failure.

    1. At V > 30V you will have the circuit open but if the internal FETs blow, you can have a short and that will damage the circuit
    2. It can short at extremely high voltages. Under the HBM model, the pins can take a 2kV transient but not a consistent voltage greater than absmax
    3. Yes, it is possible that the the IC can burn up.
  • HI Sir,

Thank your feedback, but we customer have some question feedback as below.

    1. At V > 30V you will have the circuit open but if the internal FETs blow, you can have a short and that will damage the circuit

-->if input current >2A, will BQ24314A have the same phenomenon as stated in point 1?>>

    3. Yes, it is possible that the the IC can burn up.

    a) Assuming that the IC was burnt and damaged due to the consistent voltage being greater than the absmax value, will BQ24314A temperature continue to rise? If yes, what will the maximum temperature be? When the consistent voltage greater than the absolute max value is still applied to BQ24314A, will the temperature continue to rise or remain stagnant?

    b) Assuming that the IC was burnt and damaged due to input current >2A, will BQ24314A temperature continue to rise? If yes, what will the maximum temperature be?  When input current >2A is still applied to BQ24314A, will the temperature continue to rise or remain stagnant?

    Thanks

  • 1. Abs max is 2A. Beyond that you will have excess heating of the IC that can cause thermal degradation.

3a. Yes, if the fets carbonize (burn up) the temps can rise, unfortunately I'm not able to tell you max temp. Above abs max voltage, if the device gets into thermal runaway it can heat up. If not, it depends on the pack's max power dissipation.

3b. Yes, depending on thermal runaway and package thermal parameters.
